Advocates Roadmap Release

Tomorrow, Advocates for Auto and Highway Safety will release its 2017 Roadmap of State Highway Safety Laws at a 12:00 p.m. EST press conference. The annual report reviews the previous year’s state traffic safety legislative activity and benchmarks state laws against Advocates’ recommendations. The Roadmap report often garners national and local news coverage of state highway safety policy, as well perceived shortcomings. Elaine Chao Confirmation Vote

Despite a short delay due to unrelated business, the U.S. Senate is expected to consider Elaine Chao's nomination to be Transportation Secretary tomorrow. Among all of Trump’s political nominees, Chao is still expected to be quickly confirmed. The Senate Commerce Committee advanced Chao’s nomination to the Senate floor last week by a voice vote.
Congressional Update

Also this week, the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will hold its organizational meeting (January 31) and its first hearing - on the needs of a 21st century infrastructure (February 1). Congress is rapidly finalizing its committee and subcommittee membership. Though Congressional leadership and the Trump Administration have begun dialogue on new infrastructure spending, in-depth consideration of such an initiative is not expected until later this year.
BREAKING: Just this morning, President Trump has signed a new executive order requiring that for every new federal regulation implemented, two must be rescinded. The order, which fulfills a campaign pledge, aims to cut down on regulatory red tape. We will be monitoring this new development to better understand the impact on individual agencies and GHSA’s collaboration with NHTSA.
